KITCHENER–WATERLOO RECEIVES ADDITIONAL $6 MILLION IN FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING
June 30, 2009

WATERLOO — The City of Waterloo, the University of Waterloo, and the Waterloo Regional Synchronized Swim Club will benefit from a total of more than $6 million in joint federal and provincial funding announced today by Peter Braid, MP for Kitchener–Waterloo, and the Hon. John Milloy, MPP for Kitchener–Centre. The federal investment will be delivered through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program (RInC) as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The provincial investment is part of Recreation Ontario (Ontario REC). These programs were also responsible for Monday’s announcement of $2 million for Wilfrid Laurier University’s 50-metre swimming pool.

Projects to be funded include structural upgrades to the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, Albert McCormick Community Centre, and Moses Springer Community Centre. In addition, the University of Waterloo will receive support for the expansion and redevelopment of its Warrior Field, and the Waterloo Regional Synchronized Swimming Club’s Wave Project will receive funding.

“Recreational infrastructure strengthens our community physically, socially and economically,” said Peter Braid. “By working in partnership with the government of Ontario, the municipality of Waterloo, the University of Waterloo and the Waterloo Regional Synchronized Swim Club, we are able to make major investments that will improve recreational facilities in our community, while helping to create jobs and stimulate the economy.”

“Our joint federal provincial efforts to ensure adequate facilities for sport and recreation are central, not only to improving rates of physical activity, but to improving our community’s health,” said John Milloy, MPP Kitchener Centre. “Investing in these essential community facilities will have great impact on the well-being of families across our region.”

A total of 758 projects will be funded under the RInC and Ontario REC initiatives, which were announced on June 26 by Minister of State (Science and Technology) Gary Goodyear, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, and Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Leona Dombrowsky, on behalf of George Smitherman, Ontario Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. The total joint federal and provincial investment in Ontario will be more than $380 million.

Approved projects were selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness. A list of approved projects will be available on July 6, 2009, at www.rinc-on.ca.
