Prime Minister Stephen Harper welcomes athletes from around the world to the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games
March 12, 2010
VANCOUVER – Prime Minister Stephen Harper today welcomed the world to the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler.

“Canada is honoured to host the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, where, for the first time in history, Canadian winter Paralympians will compete on home soil,” said the Prime Minister.  “Welcome to all athletes from around the world and good luck to each of you.  Over the next ten days, we will celebrate your incredible achievements and witness your spirit, strength and determination.”

The Paralympic Games officially begin with the lighting of the Paralympic cauldron.  The Paralympic Flame has been travelling across the country for the past ten days, igniting pride and support for Canada’s athletes.

Canada will be represented by over 50 athletes at the Paralympic Winter Games.   From March 12 to 21, more than 1,350 athletes, coaches, and team officials from 44 countries will participate in the following sport competitions: alpine skiing, biathalon, cross-country skiing, ice sledge hockey and wheelchair curling.

“I join with Canadians in wishing our athletes and their coaches from across the country the very best during these games,” said the Prime Minister.  “You are an enormous source of pride and inspiration to us all, and we will cheer you on in your quest for medals – Go Canada Go!”
